Cape Town – If you’re planning on sending your child to a private school in 2018, the fee bill could run over a quarter of a million rand.
Research by Discovery released at the end of 2017 revealed that it could cost as much as R2.2m to send one child to a private school from crèche up to the end of tertiary education, as reported by Finweek.
But before considering funding for your child’s entire school career, focus on getting through 2018 first. Fin24 compiled a list of some of the elite private schools in the country and the fees they charge.
About: The Anglican boarding school was founded in 1855, and is located in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. It provides education for boys from pre-primary to matric.
Annual fees: For pupils in pre-primary school to grade R29 940, additional charges push up fees by R 1 710. For a child in grade 1-3 the fees amount to R49 950, and R133 140 for boarders. Additional charges push up fees by R1 710.
For those in grade 4, fees amount to R 62 460. Boarding fees are R147 930. For a child in grade 5 fees are R73575, and boarding fees amount to R160 440. For those in grade 6 fees are R85 485, boarding is R172 320. Fees for grade 7 pupils come to R95 235 and boarding is R182 100. Additional charges push up fees by R12 900 for the year.
For those in grade 8 to 12, fees amount to R113 085, boarding fees come to R252 990. Additional charges could see fees spike by R 25 770.
At most, fees range between R31 650 to R278 760.
About: The boys’ boarding school, located in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, provides education for pupils from Grade 8 to matric. The school follows Christian values.
Annual fees: The annual board and tuition fee amounts to R265 680; there is a registration fee of R950.
About: The girls’ school in Johannesburg was founded in 1903, as a sister school to Roedean in Brighton, England. It provides education for pupils from Grade R to matric.
Annual fees: Grade R fees amount to R74 607. Fees for Grade 1- to 2 amount to R87 661. Fees for Grade 3 pupils amount to R102 860. Fees for pupils in Grades 4- to 7 amount to R115 482, and for those in Grades 8- and 9, R129 891. For those between Grades 10- and 12 fees amount to R142 973. Additional extras for pupil insurance and a building levy per pupil push fees up by R5 627.
School lunches, which are optional, amount to R7 500 and termly boarding rates come to R109 368.
At most, fees range between R80 234 to R265 468.
About: The Anglican boys’ school is based in Johannesburg and was founded in 1898. Matrics write Independent Examinations Board (IEB) examinations. The institution provides education for pupils from pre-primary school to matric, and includes sixth form or A-levels, an internationally recognised post-matric qualification.
Annual fees: For a child in pre-primary school expect to pay R63 446 for tuition. Fees for pupils in Grade R amount to R89 293, and for those in Grades 1- to 2 R 93 620. Fees for a child between Grades 3- to 7 amount to R122 854.
Tuition fees for those between Grades 8- to 12 and those in the sixth form come to R154 558. Boarding fees per term amount to R100 092.
At most fees range between R63 446 and R254 650.
About: The Methodist school, located in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, provides education for pupils from Grades R- to 12. Grade 12s write IEB examinations. It was founded in 1953 and was established as a boys’ school, before a girls’ school was built in 1995.
Annual fees: For a child in Grades R- to 2 expect to pay R91 190. For a child in Grades 3- to 5 expect to pay R103 760. For a child in Grades 6- and 7, fees are R116 520. For those in high school, Grades 8- to 12, fees come to R135 750.
Boarding fees for the boys’ college amount to R96 890. Add a hot lunch to that for R11 270.
At most, fees range between R91 190 and R243 910.
About: The school for girls is based in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg. It provides education from pre-school level to matric.
Annual fees: Fees for those in pre-school average R53 970 per year. The development levy averages R2 700. After care fees range between R7 530 and R12 450.
The annual fee for those in Grade R amounts to R62 680. Fees for those in Grades 1- and 2 are R73 880. Fees for Grade 3s are R83 090, for Grade 4s R86 560. For those between Grades 5- and 7 fees come to R98 200. Additional charges range between R250 and R8 975. After care ranges between R8 050 and R15 635.
For pupils in Grades 8- and 9 fees amount to R115 370, and for those in Grades 10- to 12 R126 110. Additional charges amount to R9 240. Boarding amounts to R107 700.
At most fees range between R56 670 and R243 050.
About: The Anglican school for girls in Johannesburg was founded in 1888. The school, however, provides pre-primary education for both boys and girls. Matrics write IEB examinations.
Annual fees: Pre-school fees amount to R58 500. Grade R fees are R69 000. For those in Grades 1- to 3, fees are R84 400. For those in Grade 4, fees amount to R95 160. For pupils in Grades 5- to 7, fees are R104 180.
Fees are R118 720 for those between Grades 8- and 9. Fees for those in Grades 10- to 12, fees come to R129 780. Boarding for those in high school amounts to R104 760 per term.
There is a development levy of R6 900 per pupil.
At most, fees range between R65 400 to R241 440.
About: The Christian boys’ school is based in Rondebosch, Cape Town, and provides education for pupils between Grade R and matric. Matrics write National Senior Certificate examinations, except for applied mathematics which is an IEB examination.
Annual fees: The fees for a child between Grade R- and 2 amounts to R59 040.
Tuition for those between Grades 3- to 7 amounts to R 103 900. Boarding amounts to R78 560.
Tuition for those between Grade 8- and 12 amounts to R137 260, and boarding comes to R103 120.
At most fees range between R59 040 to R240 380
